Review: I’ve never been to the Hippie Chick Bakery’s actual bakery in Amesbury, but I have had their delicious vegan cakes and cookies on a number of occasions. Whenever possible, Hippie Chick Bakery uses organic, locally grown ingredients in their products (which are baked fresh every day). They are well known not only for their traditional baked goods, but for their dairy-free, egg-free, vegan, and wheat/gluten-free treats. Having a vegan wedding? Have Hippie Chick make the cake – they’re beautiful (VegNews featured the bakery in their vegan weddings issue). Some items are available for purchase through their online store, and can be shipped right to your door! They also sell wholesale direct.

Review: This local chain is based in Newton, MA and has numerous locations in and around Boston. Sadly, you won’t find soy cream cheese or margarine to spread on their delicious bagels, but with flavors like Chunky Vegetable and Wildberry, is a spread really necessary? In addition to bagels, vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a variety of soups from Moosewood. All of the Moosewood soups are organic and vegetarian, and many of them are vegan. Review: Siam delight offers a delicious Thai Menu, with a full vegetarian menu on the back. Most of the dishes contain egg, but can be made without…many of their dishes contain fish sauce, so ask your server before chowing down!! Tofu can also be substituted in all dishes for a small fee. However, the highlight of their vegetarian menu is the mock “duck and “chicken” that they serve. Delivery is available with Beverly, Beverly Farms, and Wenham. Reservations are accepted.

Review: This North Shore gem serves exclusively raw, vegan cuisine that goes beyond your typical “rabbit food”. While this place is a little pricy, raw food enthusiasts will be willing to pay the extra dough for organic, ‘living’ food that is completely free of animal products. To get a taste of everything, I had the “sampler”, and I have to say that I was impressed with the dehydrated (not fried!) falafel balls and vegan pâté. During lunch hours, take-out counter service is available, and a small selection of prepared foods is also offered for those who want to eat on the run.

Review: Situated in the heart of downtown Salem is this fantastic Thai restaurant. There are a fair number of vegetarian/vegan options here, and the atmosphere is absolutely delightful. Great for a quiet lunch time meal, or a sultry dinner. Bangkok Paradise has a full liquor license and delivers to several surrounding towns (for a fee). Definitely some of the best Thai food in the area.

Review: Boston Hot Dog Company serves delicious vegan veggie dogs alongside their traditional meat options, and it’s no problem substituting a veggie dog in any of their delicious creations. Just make sure you specify “no butter” on the bun! This place is perfect for a quick bite to eat when in Salem.

Review: This cute little Greek café serves wraps and sandwiches that are made fresh to order and they don’t mind if you ask to leave off the cheese (or meat). My favorite is the Falafel Wrap. However the real reason vegans will want to eat here is the frozen tofu. This non-dairy “ice cream” treat can have pretty much whatever you want blended into it (flavoring, candy, etc.) while you wait. One pint with 2 add-ins is only $4. There are a few tables for those who want to dine in, but Kushco also has free delivery (in Salem only).

Review: Kowloon describes itself as “America’s Premier Asian Dining Complex”. This mammoth building whose exterior is constructed to look like an “ancient” temple houses a Thai Grille, Chinese Restaurant, Sports Bar, Cocktail Lounge, Comedy Club, and Keno tables. The “Volcano Bay Room” is my favorite section - diners sit aboard a faux “ship”, lights embedded in the blue ceiling simulate the night sky, and faux palm trees emerge from the walls. With Thai, Cantonese, Szechuan, American, and Sushi items on the menu, pretty much anyone can find something to eat here. Almost all of the dishes allow you to substitute tofu for chicken, beef, so there are plenty of options. My favorite is the Pan-Fried Tofu with String Beans and Cashew Nuts.
