Someone recently tipped me off that the BBQ sauce at Boloco is no longer vegan.  I checked out Boloco’s site, and noticed that they have recently changed their nutritional and allergy info.  I have changed all of the Boloco listings on the site, but I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone that eats there.

Also, thanks to Erica in Cambridge who helped me find Amy’s new Spinach Rice Crust Pizza at my local Whole Foods.  Vegan pizza makes me happy.

You know what else makes me happy?  Green Street Natural Food.  Despite the fact that it has been around for 32 years, I just discovered this 100% vegetarian grocery store in Melrose.  It’s small, but offers a good selection of organic produce, dry goods, and supplements.   As Whole Foods gobbles up natural food stores around the country, it’s refreshing to shop at a local, family owned business.

At long last, Boston finally has its own vegan society!  The Boston Vegan Association launched in May 2007, and is dedicated to promoting local animal rights activism and working towards the abolition of animal exploitation.  It features a blog, restaurant guide, and calendar of events.  Their website is an all around great resource, and if it had existed 4 years ago, VeganBoston.com probably never would have come into being.

New stuff added to the site today:

Last week the Boston Globe did a series of articles on vegan eats in the area.  I’m sad that no one contacted me or made any mention of VeganBoston.com in the restaurant feature, but at least the second article mentions the site in its closing notes.

Check out the articles:

What Vegan Looks Like – Boston Globe 5/17/07

Easy As V-E-G-A-N – Boston Globe 5/17/07

While searching the web, I stumbled onto a new blog CambridgeVegan.com.  It features recipes and product reviews that local vegans will find useful.  Check it out.

I’ll admit that I’ve been neglecting VeganBoston.com as of late.  In recent months, I’ve favored cooking over eating out.  But never fear…as the weather gets warmer, I’ll want to spend less time in the kitchen, and more time out of the house.

Besides cooking, I’ve been pouring a lot of time and energy into bookbinding.  What does bookbinding have to do with veganism?  Not much.  Traditional bookbinding tools include bone folders (made out of animal bone), natural bristle brushes (animal hair!), hide glue, leather, vellum, egg glaire, and beeswax.   I’ve set out to find alternative to these materials, and have been crafting journals, address books, and boxes that are 100% vegan.  I currently have some things for sale on Etsy.com, at ThisIsBexx.etsy.com.

Last month my computer crashed, and I haven’t been able to access my email or ftp site for over a month!  I write to you now from a shiny new computer that promises not to crash anytime soon.  Unfortunately, I lost most of the veganboston mailing list, so please send me an email with your address if you want to receive periodic updates.

Sadly, the comments feature has been permanently turned off.  Getting it up and running again was too much of a hassle (and too expensive) on the new server.  Sorry.  I’m willing to post comments that people send to me via email.

The last few months haven’t been great for vegan eats in the Boston area.   Chinatown’s Happy Buddha is now closed.  It has been replaced by another pan-Asian restaurant that has a small vegetarian menu, but serves meat.

Buddha’s Delight Too in Brookline has also closed, and My Thai Vegetarian Café and Bubble Tea Bistro has opened in it’s place.  I’ve yet to check out the new restaurant, but hope to do so soon.

Lastly, O’Naturals in Davis Square is now closed.  It has been replaced by a Boloco, so its not a total loss.

Over the weekend I started to update veganboston.com for the first time in over a month, only to find that it had been HACKED!!!  I have no idea how long the site was down, but I think it was out of commission for about a week.  Yikes!  I am in the process of moving everything over to a new server as quickly as possible, and fixing the kinks will take priority over added new content to the site.  The messageboard/comments section of the site will down for a few days, and re-establishing all of the forums is going to be a big pain in the booty. Stay tuned!

“Oh my mamma!”

I had an awesome time at the Boston Vegetarian Food Fair yesterday!

Satya Magazine was nice enough to let me use a tiny corner of their table to hand out flyers and let people sign up for my mailing list.  If you aren’t yet familiar with Satya, please head over to their website and check them out.  The magazine is packed full of interviews and articles pertaining to veganism, animal advocacy, social justice, and environmentalism.  Each issue focuses around a central theme, allowing the reader to gain an in-depth look into relevant issues.  A subscription is only $20 for the entire year, so what are you waiting for? Eric, Mo, and Kimberly are and awesome crew, and it was so much fun to hang out with them this weekend.

I also had the pleasure of meeting Doug from E Magazine, and spending some time at his table.  E Magazine is published bimonthly by Earth Action Network, and it focuses on environmental issues and green living.  I browsed through a few issues yesterday, and it looks like a great read!

As you might imagine, there was plenty of food at the Festival, and I sampled quite a few amazing vegan goodies.

One of the most amazing things I tried yesterday was Cheezly, a vegan cheese product from the UK.  Not only does it taste amazingly similar to cheese, but it melts!  Yup, you read that read, vegan cheese that tastes GOOD and MELTS.  Unfortunately, Cheezly isn’t available in the US…yet.  Be on the lookout for this product…it will blow your mind.

I am a sucker for vegan baked goods, and found myself in pig heaven yesterday!

Cat’s Vegan Bakery wins the award for my favorite vegan baked goods.  Their cupcakes were out of this world, and their vegan cinnamon buns made me scream profanity and weep tears of joy.  This Connecticut based company only sells their products via mail order, but they’re worth it!  Check out their website for more info.

Also hailing from Connecticut was Little Vegan Monsters.  I started my day off with one of their cupcakes, followed by a piece of delicious chocolate cake.  I went back later in the day to stock up on goodies, but they were totally sold out!  Little Vegan Monsters is publishing a cookbook full of their delicious recipes, due to come out sometime this fall.  You can pre-order it on Amazon.com.  50% of the profits earned from the book go to the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.  Yay!

Speaking of cookbooks, I picked up a copy of Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s new cookbook Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule.  Co-authored by Terry Hope Romero, Isa’s co-host on The Post Punk Kitchen, this cookbook looks amazing.  I got my copy signed by both authors (yay!), and I can’t wait to get in the kitchen and start baking!

When I wasn’t stuffing my face, I was chit-chatting with some of the awesome fellow vegans, including Derek and Megan from Vegan Radio.  Their all-vegan radio show airs at 12 noon every other Thursday on WXOJ-LP 103.3 FM in Northampton, Massachusetts.  Shows are also available online as a podcast.  Their one year anniversary show will air on Thursday, October 26th and will highlight the Boston Vegetarian Food Fair and feature interviews from attendees, including the folks at Satya.   Woohoo!

I could probably go on forever about all of the awesome people that I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with this weekend, but I’ll stop gushing and let you look at the rest of the site.  I will have lots of stuff to add in the coming days.  If you have any suggestions for the site, please email be at bexx@veganboston.com or post it to the message board.

Thanks!

Shortly after my last update, I realized that this month marks the one year anniversary of VeganBoston.com!  Yay!  Thanks to everyone who has sent me restaurant recommendations or joined me for a meal.  I still have scores of places to try out, but feel free to send me your suggestions.

I made a few minor changes around the site this week…the “Where to Eat” pages now include a key to the price range ratings, and the archived entries are now a little easier to navigate.  I’d to make the main page an RSS feed, and I’d also like to add a little box that would let people subscribe to the mailing list.  If anyone is willing to offer up their services (or just give me advice), please email me.

I recently finished reading Howard Lyman’s book Mad Cowboy: Plain Truth From the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat.  It was so compelling, I could hardly put it down.  Without being preachy or self-righteous, Lyman will change the way you look at the meat and dairy industries forever.  This book reinforced all of the reasons why dairy makes me want to puke.  Moments after finishing the book, my Mom called me.  I raved about the book to her for a good 15 minutes, insisting that she had to read it because it would change her life forever.   Since she’s an omni, I didn’t think she’d pay much attention to me, but the next day she emailed me to let me know that she bought both of Lyman’s book and can’t wait to read them  Yay, Mom!  For more info about Howard Lyman and the books he’s written, head over to his website at www.madcowboy.com.

Following in the footsteps of California, Massachusetts is now trying to pass a bill to ban foie gras.  Last February, the bill was passed by the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, and must now pass the Senate Committee of Ways and Means.  You can show your support for Senate Bill No. 2397 by sending the legislature a prewritten letter via  www.stopforcefeeding.com.  Farm Sanctuary is also leading a nationwide campaign to stop foie gras, and has information about what’s happening to the Massachusetts bill on their website.  Farm Sanctuary also runs NoFoieGras.org, where you can find the names of local restaurants serving foie gras, download leaflet materials, and read about the progress of the campaign.

I’m thinking about revamping the site, so please email me with any suggestions you may have.

Also, I apologize to anyone who’s emailed me recently, but hasn’t received a reply.  I need a new computer and more free time.

My home computer kind of bit the dust a few weeks ago, so I haven’t been able to work on the site much.  The poor thing is running now, but it’s not doing well.  I had to re-install windows, and as a result lost the VeganBoston.com mailing list and a few emails.  Please email me at bexx@veganboston.com if you want to receive email updates!

Thanks to everyone who suggested I check out Masao’s Kitchen in Waltham.  It’s been on my list of things to do for ages, and I finally made it over there.  The food was excellent, and I plan on eating there frequently.

I also finally tried the SoyaToo! Soy Whip.  I know this stuff has been available in the US for a few months now so a lot of people know about this already, but this vegan whipped cream is totally amazing!

That’s about it for now.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to update more often now that I’m finished with grad school! (Yay!!!)

Oh my, it’s been a while!

I’m sure that most people have already heard the news, but TJ’s House of Pizza is now called TJ Scallywaggles, and is ALL VEGAN!  Apparently, they’ve made some revisions to the menu and the atmosphere.  While I liked the old TJ’s, I can’t say that change is a bad thing.  Pretty much anything that involves veganism and eating makes me happy…

Following a recent lead from the Knocked Up Vegan blog, I signed up for Boston Organics.  Every other week I get a box of fresh, organic fruit and vegetables delivered to my door.  I got my first delivery last week, and I was more than satisfied with the quality and quantity of things I received.  Each delivery is accompanied by a flyer containing recipes that use that week’s box items, which can be helpful for figuring out what to do with a bunch of seemingly random produce.  All of the recipes are vegan or vegan friendly, which is also a plus.

I recently got a little pouty when shopping for a job interview suit…it’s very hard to find something nice that isn’t wool or silk.  After trying on a really gorgeous silk suit, I started moping because I couldn’t buy it.  I realized that I didn’t know much about the production of silk, so I paid a quick visit to PETA’s website, and read this brief article.  It made me sick to my stomach.  Blech.  I don’t want to wear anything that comes from boiled worms.  Just thinking about it as I write this is making me a little queasy…

I apologize for my recent bought of infrequent and irregular updates…I finish my Master’s program in only 10 days, and then I will have more time to devote to VeganBoston.

I have tickets for today’s Red Sox/Phillies game, so unless it gets rained out, I won’t be able to attend Erick Marcus’ talk at Grasshopper this evening.  Total bummer.  The talk will be begin at 4pm, and is free.  For of fee of $8.95, you can stay for the buffet dinner, to be served at 5:15.  Grasshopper is located at 1 North Beacon Street in Allston.

I finally split up the “Eat” section by region so that it doesn’t take forever to load.  Let me know if there are any kinks.

This week I received several emails from people who went to J.P. Licks to try out the lactose-free option, and were told by employees there that it wasn’t vegan.  The person that I spoke with reassured me that it was 100% dairy free, but didn’t show me an ingredients list.  I’ve been trying to contact someone at J.P. Licks for an official word on this, but haven’t received a reply Yet.  Until I do, I am pulling them off the site.
